K.C. Irving Environmental
Science Centre Overview
The K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens consist of laboratories, greenhouses, facilities for botanical, wetland, and environmental research, the Garden Room - a magnificent gathering room for campus, an auditorium and classroom facilities, plus six acres of public gardens focused on the plants of the Acadian Forest Region. Construction began in the fall of 1999, 100 years after the birth year of K.C. Irving. In 2015, the Huffington Post named the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre as one of the “Most Eye-Catching Campus Buildings in Canada.” The landscape architect was Alex Novell of Novell-Tullett, Bristol, England. The architects for the building were Robert Stern, Graham Wright and Preston Gumberich of Robert A.M. Stern Architects, New York.

Interview with former President Ray Ivany
Ray Ivany served as the fifteenth President and Vice-Chancellor of Acadia University from April 2009 to June 2017. At Acadia, Ray provided the leadership and vision needed to, among many things, help the university increase student enrolment by 25% between 2009 and 2016. He enthusiastically participated in every student interview for the prestigious Arthur Irving Scholarships in Environmental Science and his friendly nature, broad experience, and astute observations helped ensure that every student was fairly evaluated and enjoyed the process. Beyond Acadia, Ray advised various levels of government, most recently as chair of The Nova Scotia Commission on Building Our New Economy and co-authored the Commission’s report, Now or Never: An Urgent Call to Action for Nova Scotians.
Interview with Dr. David N. Kristie, Director of Research 2015 - 2024
Dr. Kristie took a position in Biology at Acadia in 1986, where he taught a variety courses in botany and cell biology, coordinated the Honours program for many years, and did research on plant growth and development. Dave retired from Biology in 2014, but came back to Acadia later that year, this time as Director of Research in the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre. As Director of Research Dave helps coordinate and facilitate research in the Centre and also helps administer the Arthur Irving Scholarships in Environmental Science, and the Arthur Irving Research Grants to faculty. If you would like a tour, or want to discuss possibilities for research or learning activities in the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens, please email Dave.

Since the Arthur Irving Scholarships in Environmental Science started in 2014 there have been 15 Arthur Irving Scholars. While academic excellence and an interest in environmental research are criteria for the Arthur Irving Scholarships in Environmental Science, applicants are also expected to have a history of leadership, community service and extracurricular activities. We are proud to say all of our Arthur Irving Scholars have continued to exhibit those traits during their time at Acadia. Each Arthur Irving Scholar has found their own unique path, gradually learning how to make use of the numerous and diverse opportunities for work, learning, volunteering, mentoring and research in the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre. Our most senior Arthur Irving Scholars have been involved in an incredible variety of research projects including; research on fungal endophyte diversity in an endangered plant, the use of biochar and mycorrhizae fungi for improving plant growth, analyzing mercury content in lichens, investigating hydrocarbon degradation by native marine fungi, assessing the impact of damming and past logging practices on river water quality, and investigating mercury species in a Brier Island bog.

Interview with Arthur Irving
Arthur and Sandra know the importance of giving back, not just in theory, but in practice. In 1996, when Arthur was asked to be the Chancellor of Acadia, he agreed to take on the role if there was something he could do for the students. The very first thought behind the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre was “students” and creating a very special place for them to meet. As a captain of industry and a champion of the environment, Arthur is the epitome of an outstanding corporate citizen. Sandra is a powerful and articulate advocate for the value of education in our society. Together, they have helped to make Acadia a focal point for innovation and research in environmental science. By creating the Arthur Irving Academy, and personally interviewing students for the prestigious Arthur Irving Scholarships, Arthur, Sandra, and their daughter Sarah continue to demonstrate their love and commitment to Acadia, it’s students and the environment.
Arthur, Sandra, and Sarah Irving are devoted to helping students pursue knowledge that is essential to preserving our environment.
The family has created a unique setting, in the heart of the wildly beautiful Acadian Forest Region, for the study of environmental science.

Since knowledge is best acquired through all the senses... you’ll have unbounded opportunities to observe, cultivate, preserve and protect the nature that surrounds you.
Introduction to the
Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens
The Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens is not your average garden. It’s a conservation and education garden featuring plants native to the Acadian Forest Region. The garden is comprised of nine native habitats as well as a formal walled garden, herbaceous border and medicinal and food garden. The wild flora found in the garden ranges from the rare and unusual to the common plants found throughout the region. Some of the unique treasures include Nova Scotia’s provincial flower the Mayflower, the insect eating Pitcher plant as well as several of our native orchids, Yellow and Pink lady's slippers.
Just beyond the garden gates Acadia’s Woodland Trails can be found. This recreational trail is a 1.5 km hike through the woods; it follows along a natural brook and passes an old well that was once used by the Acadia farm in the 1800’s. Both the Woodland Trails and the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens provide students and the community with a place for quiet contemplation, learning about conservation and connecting with nature.
